Gajendra Nagar Slum Project

Gajendra Nagar is a busy slum area in Bengaluru where many people don’t have easy access to eye care. Right now, lots of people there can’t see well because of problems like cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye diseases. This makes life hard for themthey can’t work or take care of their families. Over 1 billion people worldwide face this issue, and 90% of blindness happens in poor areas like Gajendra Nagar.

We work with Rotary Bangalore DownTowners to give free eye checkups, glasses, and treatments. Since June 2025, we’ve turned the Jai Bharat Nagar Centre into a fulltime place for this work. We will hold camps every two months to check eyes, give onthespot glasses, and send people for surgery if needed. Our team, including doctors and Community Vision Leaders, will visit homes and set up small clinics. We also plan to teach people about eye care to prevent problems.

Our goals are big but clear. We want to check the eyes of 5,000 people in the next two years. We aim to help 1,000 people see better with glasses or surgery. We also want to train 50 local leaders to keep this work going. By working together, we hope to make Gajendra Nagar a place where no one goes blind from simple eye problems.

Research with MS Ramaiah University

We work with MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences to study eye health. Together, we
train Community Vision Leaders and find new ways to prevent blindness. This research helps us
understand eye problems like cataracts and glaucoma better. It also teaches us how to help
more people in places like Gajendra Nagar with better care and training.
